Intumescent Fireproofing Sprayers

What Are Intumescent Fireproofing Sprayers?

Intumescent fireproofing sprayers apply coatings that provide passive fire protection (PFP) to structural steel and other specified substrates. Applications include steel beams, columns and pipe racks in commercial buildings and industrial facilities. Intumescent coatings include single-component products and two-component epoxy systems, each with its own equipment and application requirements.

When exposed to fire, an intumescent coating expands to form an insulating char layer. This slows heat transfer to the steel and helps delay the loss of structural strength. Fire-resistance performance depends on the tested coating system, specified dry film thickness, substrate geometry and application requirements.

High-build epoxy intumescent materials can be particularly demanding to spray because of their viscosity, mixing requirements and limited working time. Equipment selection should therefore start with the coating manufacturer’s application instructions.

Choosing the Right Fireproofing Sprayer for Your Job

Bolair offers single-component airless sprayers and plural-component systems for compatible intumescent fireproofing materials. Start by identifying how the coating must be mixed and delivered:

  • Single-component coatings: Select an airless sprayer that meets the coating manufacturer’s requirements for output, pressure and spray tip size.
  • Premixed two-component coatings: Where the coating manufacturer permits hot-pot application, the components are mixed before being fed into a suitable single-component sprayer. The equipment must handle the mixed material’s viscosity, and application and flushing must be completed within the specified working time.
  • Machine-proportioned two-component coatings: Use a compatible plural-component system to meter the components at the required ratio and control material temperature where specified.

Available equipment includes electric and gas-hydraulic airless sprayers, air-powered PFP pumps and dedicated plural-component proportioning systems. Suitability depends on the exact model, coating formulation, required production rate, hose configuration and wetted-material compatibility.

Maximum working pressure is an equipment rating, not the recommended spray pressure for every coating. Bolair can review your coating data sheet and project requirements to help identify an appropriate sprayer, hose and gun package.

Some epoxy intumescent coatings permit hot-pot application, where the components are mixed before being fed into a suitable single-component sprayer. Others require a compatible plural-component proportioning system. Follow the coating manufacturer’s requirements for mixing, viscosity, temperature, pressure and working time. Bolair can help assess the appropriate equipment using the coating data sheet.
First confirm which models are compatible with your coating and required production rate. An electric sprayer requires a suitable power supply, while a gas-hydraulic model can provide independence from site electrical power where engine operation is permitted. Output and pressure vary by model, so power source alone does not determine which sprayer is suitable for a larger project.
In many cases, yes. Certain Graco sprayers used for intumescent fireproofing can also be configured for compatible paints, primers, and protective coatings. However, equipment suitability should always be verified against the coating manufacturer's requirements, including viscosity, pressure requirements, tip size, and wetted-material compatibility.
There is no single pressure requirement for all intumescent coatings. The required operating pressure depends on the material being used, application temperature, hose length, spray tip selection, and desired production rate. Maximum working pressure is a rating of the equipment itself and should not be confused with the recommended spray pressure for a specific coating. Always follow the coating manufacturer's application guidelines.
Bolair carries a range of Graco equipment suitable for intumescent fireproofing applications, including TexSpray Mark, DutyMax, GH Big Rig, Xtreme PFP, and XM PFP systems. The appropriate equipment depends on the coating type, application method, and project requirements. Our team can help determine which system best matches your application.
Availability varies. Bolair periodically offers used, demo, and refurbished equipment, which may include fireproofing sprayers and related accessories. Check our used equipment inventory or contact our team for current availability.
Proper cleaning and maintenance are critical for maximizing equipment life and preventing material buildup. Follow the coating manufacturer's cleaning and flushing recommendations, as requirements vary by product. Always use cleaning products and solvents that are approved for both the coating and the equipment being used. Routine maintenance, including filter inspection, gun cleaning, and pump servicing, should be performed according to the equipment manufacturer's instructions.
